The full checklist

Read the sequence before starting. Follow each step only when its preparation and branch conditions are met.

  1. Note whether this is a food/musty odor with visible residue, rather than smoke or an electrical/burning smell. Stop use and request help for the latter.

  2. Check whether soiled dishes have sat in the machine for a long period. Remove large food debris and plan more frequent appropriate washes rather than prolonged dirty storage.

    Source: Bosch SHPM65Z*** Operating instructions · pp. 6–8, 38–40, 46
  3. Inspect the accessible filter surface and seal. Use the complete filter or seal task for visible food residue; do not reach into the pump or remove its cover.

    Source: Bosch SHPM65Z*** Operating instructions · pp. 6–8, 38–40, 46
  4. Record residual water and whether the last cycle finished. Use the standing-water task if water remains; note any visible under-sink hose restriction or household drainage backup.

    Source: Bosch SHPM65Z*** Operating instructions · pp. 6–8, 38–40, 46
  5. With all user-maintained parts refitted, use appropriate dishwasher detergent and supplied rinse aid for the next suitable complete wash. Record whether the odor recurs after cooling.

  6. Persistent odor with clean accessible parts and completed cycles needs support or plumbing assessment. This task does not prescribe mixed chemicals, pump access or drain-hose alterations.

When to stop

  • Stop using the dishwasher for smoke, a burning smell, damaged wiring, an active leak or water near electrical equipment. Isolate power and water only from a safe, dry, accessible location; otherwise keep clear and request qualified help.
  • Do not remove the pump cover, reach into the pump, open electrical panels, bypass the door interlock or move the installed dishwasher. Refer plumbing connections, installation and repairs to qualified service.
  • Stop if a part is cracked, jammed, sharp, insecure or different from the matching manual. Do not force a fitting or touch hot water. Never mix cleaning products.
Every check and possible next step

Start at “Is the odor ordinary food or mustiness with no burning, smoke or electrical sign?”. Choose only what you observed. An unobserved condition is its own answer.

Is the odor ordinary food or mustiness with no burning, smoke or electrical sign?

Is the odor ordinary food or mustiness with no burning, smoke or electrical sign?

Do not continue a cleaning investigation when the smell suggests overheating.

Steps for this check: 1.

  • It is a food or musty odor without these hazard signs
Continue to Have dirty dishes been sitting for an extended period?.
  • There is a burning smell, smoke or an electrical concern
Pause and request qualified help — The observed condition needs qualified help. Keep the appliance out of use when a safety concern remains. Share the exact model, displayed message and your before/after observations; do not open panels, bypass a lock or access the pump.
  • I have not checked this, or cannot observe it safely
Observation still needed — This check is not complete. A condition you have not observed is still unknown. Save the record and return when the preparation and observation can be completed safely; ask support if safe access is uncertain.
